تم الإفراج مؤخرا عن صور تضمنت الاستعدادات النهائية لضرب مدينتي هيروشيما وناغازاكي اليابانيتين بالقنابل النووية خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية، وذلك بعد أن ظلت هذه الصور من الأسرار العسكرية لعقود طويلة.

وكانت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية قد ضربت المدينتين بالقنابل النووية في شهر أغسطس من عام 1945 مما مهد لاستسلام اليابان وانتهاء الحرب، و أسفرت هذه الهجمات عن مقتل أكثر من 220 ألف شخص في المدينتين المنكوبتين.
